The Dating ROI Guide

A full walkthrough of how to think about return on investment in your dating life.

ROI as a frame

Return on investment is a finance frame that lifts surprisingly well into dating. The investment side has three currencies — money, time, and emotional bandwidth. The return side has more — outcomes in the technical CPN sense, but also growth, fun, and quality of life.

The frame isn't perfect. It works best in the search phase, where investments are discrete and outcomes are countable. It works less well inside an established relationship, where both inputs and outputs blur into continuous gradients of shared life.

The three measurable currencies

Money: log every dating-related dollar. Total is your spend currency.

Time: log every dating-related hour, including transport and texting in any volume that meaningfully eats your day. Total is your time currency.

Outcomes: define them once, count them honestly. The denominator under both currencies.

The three less measurable ones

Emotional bandwidth: how much of your daily mental energy this dating activity occupies. Use a one-to-five self-rating monthly.

Growth: are you becoming a more interesting, capable, or grounded person because of your dating life? Quarterly journal entry, three sentences, no scoring.

Net life direction: is the rest of your life — career, friendships, health — getting better or worse during this dating chapter? Quarterly check-in, honest answer.

Reading the dashboard

CPN trending down: efficiency improving. Good.

CPN flat at a level you're comfortable with: stable equilibrium. Fine.

CPN trending up while outcomes are flat: spending more for the same outcomes. Investigate. Usually one girl or one venue is the culprit.

CPN trending up with outcomes also up: scale increase, which is sometimes intentional and sometimes not. Check whether you're actually happier; the metric alone isn't sufficient.

Where the guide ends and judgment begins

The data gives you a baseline. It tells you where to look. It doesn't tell you what to do. The decisions — to keep seeing someone, to change venues, to take a dating break, to enter exclusivity — are yours, and they're made with full information rather than the fuzzy story you'd be using otherwise.

That's the entire pitch of the framework. Better data, same decision-maker. The decisions get better because the data is real.
